素有“江南明珠”之称的江苏天目湖旅游度假区位于苏、浙、皖三省交界处的江南历史名城溧阳市境内，目前已成为集森林度假、农业观光、环境保护和湖上娱乐于一体的国家AAAA级旅游区和江苏省省级旅游度假区，是省内外游客旅游度假、观光休闲首选胜地。山青、水秀、茶香、鱼鲜、空气好构成天目湖旅游度假区“湖光山色风景独秀，碧水蓝天江南明珠”的幽雅意境，不仅使天目湖旅游度假区成为动植物生息繁衍的乐园，而且给游客以“绿色仙境”、“返朴归真”的美妙感觉。然而，令人遗憾的是，在风景秀丽的山水之间，到处可见的各类标识的英文翻译却是错误连篇，甚至是触目惊心，颇是煞风景。

在整个天目湖山水园核心景区，景点名称英译错误很多。比如说，在毗邻而居的两块指示牌上，同样是“江南”，其译文竟然会说法不一，一个叫做South of downtown，另一个叫做South of Yangtze。可是，从牌子所采用的木材及牌子的外观来看，它们绝对应该是同时制作的同一批产品，而且是同时竖立起来的。对此，笔者百思不得其解的就是，在这两块景点指示牌上面，同为“江南”，为何其英语译文竟然会如此不同？译者如此处理究竟是出于什么考虑？如果说把“江南”翻译成South of Yangtze尚能让人看懂其中意思的话，那么，South of downtown与“江南”有什么关系呢？译文的字面意思只能是“闹市以南地区”或者“市中心以南地区”，与“江南”简直就是风马牛不相及。更为难以置信的是，“江南街市”这一词语组合从字面上来看，似乎并无乡村的意思，可是其译文Rural Area of South of downtown却白纸黑字地告诉大家，这里是乡下。不过，再对照一下景区其他的译文，似乎这个疑问找到了答案，因为译者把“江南田园”翻译成了Rural Area of South of Yangtze，也就是说，在译者眼里，所谓“田园”就是“乡下”（Rural Area）。译者能够有如此认识，应该说还是说得过去的吧，可是，让人难以置信的是，译者怎么会把这个“乡下”移栽到了街市去呢？又是街市又是乡下究竟是什么意思呢？在中国传统文化中，乡下是没有街市的，只有集镇和城市才会有街市，而集镇和城市似乎又不宜被称为Rurual Area啊。说到这里，其实笔者也开始糊涂起来了，不是真正的糊涂，而是被译者搞糊涂了，不知道他葫芦里卖的什么药。除了上述疑问外，这两个景点名称的英译还有其他一些问题，比如说“江南”倒底应该怎么译？

“江南”在中国传统文化可谓是一个响当当的“名头”，在每个人的心目中都有自己理解的“江南”，但是，“江南”究竟是指什么地区，却是见仁见智。如此理解上的说法不一，也许就造成了其翻译的困难，更何况，富有中国文化含义的名称要想传神地译成外语，真的不是一件很容易的事，比如说，北京奥运会的吉祥物“福娃”的英译名称从Friendlies这个不伦不类的名称正本清源为Fuwa，就充分说明了文化因素是翻译中的最大难点，而“江南”恰好就是这么一个例证，因为它不是一个单纯的行政区划或者地理概念，在中国传统文化中，它更多被赋予了文化色彩。在这里，要想译好“江南”，就必须首先对这个地域范围有个了解，从而才能传神地译出文化意义上的“江南”概念。

根据相关网站（http://baike.baidu.com/view/9229.htm）的资料，江南，字面义为江之南面。“江”在汉语中又特指大江，即长江。江南本意指长江以南的地区。在古代，江南往往代表着繁荣发达的文化教育和美丽富庶的水乡景象，区域大致为长江下游南岸的地区。虽然历史上以“江南”命名的行政区很多，而且，“江南”有广义和狭义的概念，广义的江南指整个长江中下游长江以南的地区，狭义的江南指苏、浙、皖部分地区，但是，现在特指的江南为狭义的江南，是指被文人美化了的地区。即除去福建省与浙南的江南东道，是以南京至苏州一带为核心地带，包括长江以南安徽省、江西省、浙江省的部分地区，即江苏南部和浙北、皖南、赣北地区。长江下游以北部分地区，如扬州地区等，虽然地理位置在江北，但经济文化形同江南，也被看作是文化意义上的江南地域的组成；而并非长江流域却被认为是江南地域的有太湖以南以至钱塘江以南部分地区，如绍兴、宁波地区等。

当然，上述追根溯源仅仅是在中文概念中对“江南”有了比较深入的了解，而由于文化因素的处理在翻译过程中的困难，要想传神地把文化意义上的“江南”译成外语，确实非常不易。至于地理概念上的“江南”的英译，目前自行其是的各种说法也比较多，这一点在网络上输入相关关键词进行搜索之后就能发现，比如，South of Lower Yangtze River Area，areas in south of Yangtze River，the area to the south of the Yangtze River，area south of the Yangtze，Regions South of the Yangtze River，regions south to the Yangtze River，South of the Lower Yangtze River，south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River，southern Yangtze River regions，Southern Yangtze River Area等等。江苏无锡有一所江南大学，其英文校名是Southern Yangtze University。上述说法虽然有着这样那样的差异，但至少能够让人理解，用英文说就是至少能够make sense。不过，对于“江南”的英译，笔者倾向于使用areas south of the Yangtze River这一说法。理由之一是，虽然“长江”的英译一直使用Yangtze River，但实际上，Yangtze River应该是“扬子江”的英译，而“扬子江”是江苏省扬州以下至入海口的长江下游河段的旧称（http://baike.baidu.com/view/66750.htm），现在的一般理解则扩大到南京以西为界，而从南京到长江入海口这一流域以南的地区，正是“江南”地理概念和文化概念的主要地区。无论如何，“江南”是以江苏省的长江以南地区为重心的，而浙北、皖南、赣北则可以看作是这一重心地区的延伸。其二，考虑到译文择词的困难，south of the Yangtze River应该是能够在英语中make sense的最理想表达了，顾名思义就是“位于扬子江以南的地区”。第三，从英语语法规则看，south of the Yangtze River作为后置修饰成份修饰areas也无懈可击。第四，这里的“地区”英译是用area 还是region，笔者倾向于使用area，这是因为region强调行政区划，而area则可泛泛而指任何意义上的地理区划，其涵盖性更强。著名的网络百科全书Wikipedia对Yangtze River Delta下的定义是：The area lies at the heart of the region traditionally called Jiangnan (literally, "south of the Yangtze River"). The Yangtze River drains into the East China Sea. In modern times the area has given rise to the Yangtze Delta。由此可见，south of the Yangtze River这一说法还是被广泛接受的。当然，“江南”英译采用汉语拼音的现在也有不少，上述释义中也提到了Jiangnan，只是在具体语境中，如果使用Jiangnan来表示“江南”，最好还应加上一些解释性的背景补充文字。

在雇主眼里，一个求职人员的履历表占３０分，求职附信占２０分。所以写好求职附信几乎和写履历表一样重要。In employers’ eyes, a job hunter’s resume is worth 30 points and the cover letter is worth 20 points. So writing good cover letters is almost as important as writing resumes.

身为因特网时代的翻译员，我们有没有充分利用信息革命给我们带来的巨大便利呢？

就本人来讲，在搞笔译时是须臾离不开电脑和网络的，我最常用的二件工具是中国译典和GOOGLE，其它词典基本上不用。如果某个东西能在海量的中国译典中查到，那自然省事，照搬就是；如若没有，只好到GOOGLE中去大海捞针，“海”大了什么“针”都有，就看你会捞不会捞！

Google以快速全面的全文搜索为其特征，能在数秒钟内从近一百亿个网页中找到包含你输入的关键词的结果；只要你输入合适的关键词，查到适当的内容，许多在翻译上遇到的问题都可迎刃而解。

几乎没有一个翻译员是不用词典的，而Google就是我们所能找到的最庞大的词典——确切地说，这样一本词典其实就是整个互联网，而Google的作用是使得这本浩如烟海的虚拟大词典变得可利用，可查询。

笔者将自己在这几年内利用google的一些实例和体会作了一番总结，略举于此，希望能对后来者有所益助。

Google的第一个用途是可以帮我们破译疑难英文单词，特别是那些在传统词典中查不到的。互联网中既有在数量上占绝对优势的英文网页，也有着无以计数的纯中文网页，但对翻译人员来说最有价值的是那些中英文杂合的双语网页，这些双语网页以各种形式存在，诸如分类词汇、翻译研讨、双语应用文、双语企业站点、双语新闻等等，这其中有好多是以明显的中英文对照格式呈现在我们面前的，给我们迅速查找对应译文带来了极大的便利。

但是如何才能查到这些双语网页呢？这里面大有讲究。比如你想查一个机械术语“无级调速”的译法，在google查询框中直接输入“无级调速”得到的结果都是中文，解决不了问题。但你可以用“引诱法”，即用一个“诱导词”引出有中英文对照的网页，这个“诱导词”一般应该是目标语词，而且应该是和查询词直接相关的，比如上例，要查“无级调速”的英译，那么诱导词应该是个英语单词，根据我们的经验，这个词的英译中应该带个“速度”，故输入“无级调速，speed” ，嘿，一大堆带有“无级调速”和它的多种对应英译“stepless speed variation” “stepless speed regulation”等词组的搜索结果就一目了然地显示在你面前了！依靠google的关键词反显技术，“无级调速”和 “speed”均以红色突出显示，非常醒目。

“引诱法”是利用google查询的最经典手段，其成败及效率高低决定于“诱导词”的选择。诱导词没选对，就可能让你白受累，笔者在寻找“一次性通过ISO9000认证”中的“一次性”的地道英译时就曾吃过不少苦头，接连用了once,one, first, 等多个诱导词查看了几十个网页都查不到理想译法，直到过了好几天突然来了灵感，起用attempt作为诱导词，才找到了满意译法：at the first attempt。

上例皆选用目标语译词成分充作诱导词，这是效率最高的，但它对使用者有要求，即必须能准确猜出目标语译词中的一部分，如果你对目标语译词茫无头绪，从何下手就成了难题。比如我要译一个菜单名：“金钱肚”，我除了知道这是个菜名外，其它的一概不知，怎么办？那就要找一个目标语相关词，即在一个包含金钱肚英译的网页里，极有可能同时出现的一个词，比如，menu(既然菜名搞了英译，那么想想上面还应有“菜单”的英文吧！)、meat(这金钱肚说什么都可能是一种肉或者和其它肉类摆在一起的吧！)等等。

当然，诱导词也不一定非得是目标语不可，查中文英译时也可用中文引诱词，如“英文名称”（输入“第七届中国国际食品和饮料展览会. 英文名称”，会查到：“第七届中国国际食品和饮料展览会. 英文名称： SIAL CHINA”。），相似的此类引诱词还有：“英文”、“中英对照”、“英语”等等，但这种引诱词成功率很低，可作为备用手段。

查找中英对照内容，除了用“引诱法”，还有其它一些办法：

比如要查某个单位的英文名。现在大部分上规模的单位都有官方网站，所以直达其网站就是最好的办法，

在google中输入：“allintitle:  "中国酒类商业协会"”

注：allintitle是google的查询功能词，意思是“以下关键词出现在title中”，按照网站设计的通用准则，单位名称一般都会出现在单位官方网站的title中。

作为辅助翻译工具，GOOGLE还有一个非常重要的作用：试对作用，即用尝试法寻找某种英语表达方式和采用“翻译统计学”原理检验某种译法是否妥当或地道。

比如，我要翻译“ 相对水平120°-170°范围内无级调节”，  我知道“无级调节”是“stepless adjustment”,“水平”是 “the horizontal”,“度”是 “degrees”，但不知这个“相对水平…度” 怎么表达最恰当？再具体点，就是中间这个介词选什么好定不下来。输入“" degrees * the horizontal" site:.us”，（注：*是通配符，即可代替任何一个词），google一下，就看到以下类似表达：

at an angle of 60 degrees above the horizontal；

at an angle of 20 degrees from the horizontal；

in the zone from fifteen degrees below the horizontal。

据此判断，选择“from the horizontal.”是本例最佳译法。

在上例中，将关键词加半角引号，是表示这几个词是前后相连的，按顺序不可掉换的，如果不加引号，google就可能返回所有包含有 degrees 和horizontal的网页，而不管其如何组合。

后面的site:.us表示只在以.us结尾的域名网页中查找关键词，这一点很重要。因为互联网是个大杂烩，上面出现的英语也是良莠不齐，如果不加选择，就可能查到好多劣质英语，被其误导。比如，你想验证一下“交通便利”的英译是不是convenient traffic，输入google，搜索所有网页，你可以得到42400项返回结果——这是不是说明这个翻译是地道的呢？当然不对，你若细加分析，这42400项结果绝大多数是来自中国人编的网页，是典型的中国式英语。

所以要想查证地道的美式英译，你就该在美国人编的网站上搜索，要想查证地道的英式英译，你就该在英国人编的网站上搜索。那么怎么判断某个网站是美国人或英国人编的呢？这里面没有万能的绝对正确的方法，但我们可以用以下方法一试。

国际互联网的域名体系主要有二种，一种是以.com、.net等结尾的功能体系，另一种是以.us、.cn、.uk等结尾的区域体系。任何一个以.com结尾的域名，由于全世界的人都可以申请，所以你根本判断不出网站编制者和所有者的来路，但是第二种体系的域名就不一样，以.us为例，这是特别分配给美国的顶级域名，以此结尾的域名其使用者基本上来自美国本土，当然也包括一些在美国有业务的外国单位，但不会很多，所以如果你把搜索范围限定于.us，则返回结果基本上可认定为是标准美国英语。

有关域名后缀与国家（地区）名分别如下对应：

中国 香港 台湾 新加坡 日本 美国 英国 加拿大 澳大利亚

.cn .hk .tw .sg .jp .us .uk .ca .au

既然google的查询功能词“site:”为我们提供了限定查询网页的功能，那我们就可以方便地使用之，要想查英国英语就输入site:.uk,查加拿大英语，就输入site:.ca。

另外，还可以通过限定网页格式的方法来提高查询质量，网上常见的网页格式及相应的文件名后缀有：.htm或.html(超文本文件)、.txt (文本文件)、.pdf ( adobe acrobat PDF文件)、 .doc( WORD文件)、 .xls( EXCEL文件)、 .ppt (Powerpoint 文件)

最普遍的网页格式是超文本文件，即以.htm为后缀的，同时这也是最容易被粗制滥造的网页，一般来说，.pdf等特殊格式的文档由于其制作上较为复杂，一般需要作者精心准备，所以其文章质量相对高些，由此类推，.pdf、.ppt、 .doc、.xls文件的翻译质量也应比.htm类型高。Google提供了filetype这个功能词来选择搜索文件格式，例如在搜索框中输入：“ 组织机构 filetype:.pdf”，即搜索所有包含有“组织机构”的PDF文件。

我们对自己的某些翻译满意与否，凭自身的感觉是没用的，毕竟我们在英语文化氛围中泡的时间不长，就是泡的时间较长，要想拥有对母语般的那种感觉，几乎是不可能的；那么怎么办呢？我的建议是：充分利用google的各种查询手段，以“语言学网络统计”的方法来评判某种译法的优劣。

就如前述“一次性通过”的英译“pass at the first attempt”，我为什么觉得这个比较地道呢，而不是从别的词典中查到的“ pass without retrying”, 那是因为将前者用引号引起来输入google，返回结果565项，而后者返回结果只有一项。

善用“翻译统计法”，就好比为自己找来了一位万能的导师，可以在“他”引导下找到最佳译法。

例1，“排名第一”的准确表达，不知是ranks first, ranks the first 还是ranks at the first,google一下：

““ranks first “ site:.us ”返回结果：9,190

“" ranks the first" site:.us ”  返回结果：70项，且其中好些结果是：”ranks. The first”形式的，即ranks 和the first 分属二个句子的。

“" ranks at the first" site:.us ” 返回结果： 1项

故正确译法是：ranks first.

例2，中文“长江三峡工程，是当今世界上最大的水利枢纽工程.”

英译：The Yangtze Three Gorges Project (TGP) is the largest hydropower-complex project ever built in the world

想验证一下其中的“水利枢纽工程”之英译hydropower-complex project是否准确。

输入“‘hydropower-complex project’site:.uk” 只有5项,而hydropower complex(不含project) 却有745项,再挑一二项细加研究，就可发现，“水利枢纽工程”之正确英译是hydropower-complex ,不必也不应带上project.

在实际从事翻译工作时，为最大程度地利用网络资源，我们往往将google的二种功能，即查词功能和试对功能，结合使用。

例3：查“固体芳香剂”的译法。

按前述方法输入“固体芳香剂,solid”，查得一种译法是 solid air freshener,对不对呢？再输入到“ “solid air freshener” site:.us”,返回结果725项，且粗略一看上面的英文大意，基本上和中文用途吻合，OK, 就是它了.

另外，还可以用google的图片查询功能来帮助翻译，特别是英译中方向，比如，笔者在翻译一篇灯具文章中遇到这二个词straight batten holder和angle batten  holder ，我知道holder 是灯座，但前面的straight/angle batten却不知如何是好，照字面直译是“直板式灯座”和“弯板式灯座”，但中文灯具术语中没有这种说法，怎么办？我便把“angle batten holder ” 输入到google中进行图片(image)查询，看一看返回的图片，是何物一目了然，虽然仍说不准其中文术语，但只要拿这个图片给客户一看，客户便完全明白了。

最后，还要附带一句，google最近推出的工具条(google toolbar),具有网页即指即译（英译中）功能，把它下载下来弄到IE工具栏上，为我们的因特网辅助翻译又平添了一分方便。

翻译是一项古老的职业，而因特网却是个全新的现代技术，努力促成古老的翻译与全新的因特网之间的联姻，催生出“因特网辅助翻译”这个新生儿，势必会给翻译界带来革命性的新变化，开创高科技时代的翻译新纪元。

Google是无意中充当了IAT的工具，而中国译典则是自她诞生的第一天起便为IAT而呼吸，将二者结合起来，将中国IAT事业不断推向前进，则是我呕心沥血、矢志不渝的终极目标！

汉语中有许多涉及数字的成语和俗语，“不管三七二十一”就是一条。怎么将其翻译成英语是一个问题，如果照字面译成 not caring the fact that three times seven is twenty-one 会让人觉得有点莫名其妙，如果将“不管”译成despite 或disregard，给人的印象则是一个固执、不承认真理的人（因为三乘七等于二十一是连小学生都知道的事实，是没有办法不去“顾”的，当然这个汉语俗语的意思和数学本身也不再有什么关系）。“不顾一切”；“不分是非情由”（《现代汉语词典》解释）的意思不一样。我查了几本汉英词典，可有下列译法：

以上有单词，有短语，也有俚语；有的强调不管会造成什么结果，有的强调做事者本身卤莽，具体翻译时到底选用哪个，要看上下文的意思和文体而定。其实，任何词典都不可能把所有可能的译法都列出来，比如，我认为与原文最近似的应该是leave out of one’s calculation，而在一定的上下文中下面这些说法也是可以的：dash off；thoughtless；devil-may-care；nonchalantly；impetuously；hot-headedly。换句话说，“译无定译”，翻译的唯一标准是上下文。

再举一个例子：“三下五除二，他只用了半个小时就全处理完了。” 这里的“三下五除二”本来是依据珠算口诀，现在指做事麻利，不拖泥带水，可译为He neatly finished the whole thing in half an hour. 而“三下五除二”也可译成下列说法：quickly, nimbly, dexterously, deftly, crisply, spryly, quick and neat。

这里告诉大家汉译英时很重要的一点：不能仅靠译本汉英词典。在汉英词典找到“对应词”后，不要急于用到句子中去，要先查一下英语原语词典，看看该词确切的意思十分适合上下文（包括贬褒和文体色彩），在句子中如何使用（名称的是否可数，动词的是否及物，能跟什么样的宾语等），还可以查一下同义词词典，以找一个更合适的词或避免老是用同一个词（英语特别强调多样化和新鲜），这样才能保证译文的质量。

　　News English——通过听新闻获得相关词汇

　　Watch and Listen——我的最爱，尤其是里面的London Life 和 Weekender，有很多关于一些社会和生活话题的讨论和访谈，在听的同时可以学到这些话题中最常用而且地道的表达方式。大家可以从他们的Archive里面选择自己感兴趣的专题并下载，反复听，跟读，然后朗读，过把播音员的瘾。

　　The Flatmates——一群“寓友”的故事，每一个episode都短小精悍，一共有100多集了，很适合背诵，应为它很有可能就是你在国外的真实生活。

　　Grammar and Vocabulary中的How to也很不错呀，里面是按照语言的功能来介绍英语的，比如说如何去恭维别人，如何去结束一个对话等等。

　　第二步，下载MP3和PDF。

　　第三步，每周挑选一个MP3作为模仿对象，把PDF打印下来，精读一遍，然后每天坚持听3遍，并且在文字材料上用彩笔标出句子的重音所在，每天大声模仿朗读3遍，一开始语音、语调一定要夸张点，到后来再稍微收一收。

　　第四部，坚持3个月的时间，你会对自己的进步满意的
